Intro

Norway is a long and geographically diverse country, stretching far into the Arctic. During summer, temperatures can exceed 30°C in Oslo while parts of northern Norway struggle to reach 5°C on the very same day. At other times, the situation reverses entirely, with the Arctic coast enjoying warmer and more stable weather than the south. In Norway, weather patterns are highly unpredictable, and anyone planning a cycling trip should come prepared for a wide range of conditions regardless of the season.
One of the key reasons Norway remains relatively habitable this far north is the Gulf Stream, which plays a major role in moderating temperatures along the coastline. In fact, regions such as Lofoten have some of the mildest average temperatures anywhere in the world for their latitude. This is one of the reasons Norway’s Arctic regions are surprisingly accessible by bike compared to similar latitudes elsewhere on the planet.

On this page, the best we can realistically do is provide a general overview by dividing the country into six broad climate regions. Even then, local variations can be enormous. One area may experience days of sunshine while another region, only a few hours away, is dealing with heavy rain, strong winds, or low cloud cover.
People often ask what the “best” month is to cycle Norway, but there is no simple answer. It depends entirely on the routes you plan to ride, the type of experience you want, and ultimately what the weather decides to do. Every month has advantages and disadvantages. Early summer brings long daylight hours and quieter roads in some regions, while late summer often offers warmer seas and more stable mountain conditions. Autumn can deliver beautiful colours and empty roads, but also colder nights and rapidly changing weather.
Below, we break down the strengths and weaknesses of each season and month to help you better understand what to realistically expect when planning a cycling trip in Norway. We also cover the few things you can rely on with certainty here, because the weather itself is rarely one of them.
