At present, it will never open again. However, last year, they removed the big rock slide mess that I experienced in 2021. Many cyclists reported it was easy to get past, but we don’t know yet if another landslide occurred this winter. Everyone cycles the road at their own risk, but I believe you will be fine if no major rockfalls happen this winter. There is a bus option if blocked. See the Fjord Norway page for further info: http://www.cyclenorway.com/routes/norse-all-road-series/overview/fjord-norway/fjord-norway/

We decided the ferry will suit us best.

It shouldn’t matter. If you are booking last minute, then I would ring and check. But if we are talking a few weeks or months away, then if they have a cabin available, then you are more or less guaranteed to have space for your bike.

*Ferrys (coastal liner Hurtigruten and Havila) may get fully booked on the dates you want, so booking in advance is recommended.*

              – I should note this is only if you book a cabin. Walk on traffic is easy to do without booking but you will need to book your bike place before hand. The public transport page has all the info about this. http://www.cyclenorway.com/getting-around/

You will not be able to take fuel bottles on the plane and will need to dispose of them beforehand. A camping stove should be fine as long as there is no gas or fuel in it.

                  Thank you very much Matthew.
                  We will consider flying.
Have you had any issues flying with a used camp stove and fuel bottles (for camping fuel) within Norway?
In Canada the airlines often won’t allow a used stove or bottles, even if empty and clean.
                  Cheers

                    Hi Roddy,

                    1. The prevailing winds come from the southeast, so Bergen to Oslo will have more tailwinds in theory. But I have ridden Oslo to Bergen and never felt the wind was an issue. Lots of mountains shelter you.

                    2. It’s hard to say but you should expect at least 80km will be unrideable. When you get to Haugastøl (coming from Oslo) you can test the first gravels section out and see if it’s ridable to Finse. If not turn around and take a train to Myrdal. From there see if you can ride down to Flåm and take the train back up to Myrdal and then jump on a regional train to Bergen, where by you will jump off at one of the small stops before Voss. This route is still amazing without Rallarvegen.

                    3. There is one section after Hokksund (coming from Oslo) that climbs on gravel which is 8/10 for a bit. You can skip this section and cycle road 40 instead (but expect traffic). And you must keep off the E134 to Kongsberg (use the old road). There are other climbs further up towards Geilo and I would rate them 6-7 out of 10.

                    4. Here is the route and GPX files: http://www.cyclenorway.com/routes/norse-all-road-series/overview/route-1-2/

                        Hi Julia,

The same applies with the trains. There are limited bike spaces, and many people cycle the Trondheim – bodø route in June.

From Tromsø the easiest way to get back south is to fly. You could fly Tromsø – Oslo- Modle maybe for around US$150-200 if you book in advance.
SAS allows bikes to be used as normal luggage (under 23kg) for no extra fee. You can pick up some cardboard bike boxes at a sport shop in Tromsø. Tromsø Outdoors is the best place, but XXL is also good.

If not, as you mentioned, the expensive Havila is an option.

Every other option will be a lot of hassle and logistics.

                          Hey,
I just want to let everyone who might be interested in the furture know that the alternative route worked well.
That being said, the alternative parts were the most draining with little views and lots of cars (Hamnoroy) / bad road conditions (Senja).
It was still worth it, because the last part from Senja to Tromso is so beautiful!
About cycling in April: I obviously don’t have the comparison. It felt very special with all the mountains still covered in snow and with almost no other tourists (certainly no other cyclists). I was however really lucky with the weather, having lots of clear skies.
But note that in April you won’t have many options for stops. Some cafes, campsites and even toilets on the route only open mid may. I felt it was still enough, but would certainly bring my cooking supply next time 😉

                            Helo, Matthew,

Thanks for creating and running such a great website. I was delighted to find it.

A friend I are trying to tour (cycling and camping) in every country Europe (22 so far) and plan to do a ride in Norway this year. We will be arriving in Oslo on the bus from Hamburg on the evening of 7 June and then have 7 days before our return bus from Oslo.

I did a couple of rides in Western Norway (including Bergen to Hammerfest) in the 1980s but I don’t remember much of the riding (the scenery created fantastic memories, of course) except the unpleasantness of some of the tunnels and having to ride through driving snow at one point. So, we need some advice.

                            1. We could take the overnight train to Bergen on 7 June and then ride back to Oslo, but would rather get straight on the bikes that evening. So is there any strong reason (like prevailing Westerlies?) to do the tour Bergen-Oslo instead?

                            2. Given that we will be starting on 7 or 8 June and, as you have warned, Rallarvegen is going to be impassible, how much riding will we miss overall through having to take the train? Would we miss so much of the wilder part of the route that we might as well take the southern route instead?

                            3. We will be riding Airnimal folding bikes with 47-507 tyres. We have done a fair amount of gravel riding – although mostly on road – elsewhere in Europe on these; on your ride grading scale, we are happy with 5-6 but don’t like doing much at 7-8. Would any parts of the route (northern or southern) be likely to be force us to walk (excluding because of heavy snow)?

                            4. Are there GPX files to go with your useful video description of the routes?

                            Cheers,
                            Roddy

Hi Patricia, if you are planning on leaving Bergen in early May, you basically have two options.
The coastal route or a mixture of both coastal and inland areas. Manyy of the famous mountain roads don’t open until late May so it’s hard to plan a mountain route that early.

Coastal: http://www.ridewithgps.com/routes/39267512?privacy_code=fYonryshba76jGZX (From Trondheim, you basically follow the Eurovelo 1 to Nordkapp).

Mix route: On this route, once you reach Ålesund, you will need to check to see if Trollstigen and Aursjøvegen roads are open. If not, you’ll need to stick with the coastal route to reach Trondheim: http://www.ridewithgps.com/routes/40031080?privacy_code=eMyAk8MyKtpYKMjM

Use this page to check opening dates: http://www.cyclenorway.com/opening-closure-of-roads/

If you plan to start from Oslo you can take National Cycle Route 7 or 9 in early May without any problems.

                                  Hi Jamie,
cool to see that people are planning to do the same route at the same time. Let’s see what the actual plans will be by mid June, then we could share contact numbers or so, to plan a meeting point along the route.
