Hi
Will be embarking on a Bergen to Nordkap trip, maybe cheating with public transport for some parts depending on time constraints and weather.
The route will be EuroVelo1 inspired, maybe a bit off-route to explore fjords in the beginning.
My big question is about water. I’ve ridden in Spain and France and it was really important to carry enough water, even with a lot of towns, although it was also much hotter there. How is it in Norway, particularly in the more rural parts? Will I have access to fresh/bottled/drinkable water every ~40km? Is it easy to find?
In my experience water is usually easy to obtain, though I always check the route on Komoot or some other mapping service beforehand. In the mountains I usually fill the bottles directly from the streams since the water is pure and drinkable. There are often plenty of churches in rural Norway with water available, and sometimes I have rung the doorbell on a nearby house and asked for permission to fill a bottle or two.
I agree with Philip and would add, you will, on average, need less water than Spain and France. I never concern myself about water issues going up the coast. Have two bottles (1.5l max 2l) and you will be fine. Churches, gas stations, supermarkets, public toilets, etc, are scattered all along the route. You’ll also have fast-flowing streams in the remote areas to keep you topped up. Don’t fill up from streams in farm areas as there may be pesticide runoff from the crops.
