Hi all,
My partner and I have been cycling the Fjord Norway route for the last couple of weeks (https://cyclenorway.com/routes/norse-all-road-series/overview/fjord-norway/).
We arrived in Flåm a few days ago but we’re basically stranded here because of storm Hans.
The next part of the route will be the famous Rallarvegen and after that crossing the Hardangervidda. However, we’re in doubt if it would actually be rideable after such bad weather. We’re planning on continuing tomorrow morning (10/08).
Does anyone have information about the road condition on Rallarvegen and Hardangervidda?
And if the road would be unrideable, what could be an alternative route to ride towards Bergen?
Thanks in advance! ?
Hi,
It’s tough to know what condition Rallarvegen is in right now. Parts of the road could have collapsed or been flooded. Only locals in the area will have that answer.
Personally I would not cycle it unless certain it’s OK to do so.
Try contacting the tourist centre at the other end of the route:
Haugastøl Turistsenter AS
3595 Haugastøl
Tlf: 32 08 75 64
E-mail: mail@haugastol.no
Maybe they will have more info?
Other options to get to Bergen include. Taking the train from Flåm – Myrdal – Voss and cycling from there. You find the route towards Bergen on the Oslo to Bergen page.
You could get off before Voss at Upsete but the first 30km is gravel and I’m unsure what condition it’s in.

You can also take a ferry from Flåm down Sognefjorden to, for example, Rysjedalsvika. Then take another ferry (only two a day) across the fjord where you reach cycle route 1 (Eurovelo 1) that leads to Bergen. http://www.norled.no/en/maps-and-schedules/expressboat/sogn-and-fjordane/

Please check our home page for more links about other road conditions, including Hardangervidda (Road 7).
Hey Joren, it wuold be great if you could give us (me) an update about the road conditions/your plans. I plan to bike Rallarvegen next week.
Big thank you!
cheers,
Berno
I’ve contacted Flåm and Hugastøl tourist centre (thanks for the advice, Matthew). Both said Rallarvegen is rideable, but they weren’t particularly recommending it because of the risk of falling rocks.
I’m gonna ride up to Finse (from Flåm) tomorrow and then continue to Haugastøl and Hardangervidda the day after. I’ll post an update with my own observations then. ?
Safe travels Joren, and I really appreciate an update on the road ?
Good news: Rallarvegen is perfectly rideable! ?
Rode it from Flåm to Haugastøl and didn’t encounter any obstacles which seemed to be caused by the storm. I can’t compare it with previous experiences though, as this is the first time I ride it. But definitely rideable. ?
Thanks Joren!
