I have been training pretty consistently the last couple of years, and have gone from being a lumpy couch-potato to a much leaner and active cyclist.
Right now, my FTP is around 230W, and my 20-minute power is around 3.2W/kg. I can keep a power value of around 150 “indefinitely”.
My question is how fit you have to be to complete most of the trips described on your YT-channel and on this site, Matthew.
My longest trip so far is 104km / 1800 meters of elevation, and I realize that I should probably try getting a few trips up towards 150km before embarking on multi-day trips. Doing 100K trips several days in a row seems a little daunting right now, but I could certainly motivate myself to train for longer trips if I have a certain feel for what it takes. I realize I could just lower my pace and take my time, but can you talk to what level of fitness you deem necessary?
I’m 46 and a family dad, total hours of cycling per week has been 12-14 the past 6 months.

First of all, congratulations on your fitness on becoming leaner and more active. It certainly sounds from what you have already achieved that you are ready now to head out on a multi-day trip. I don’t think you should over analysis it too much. Better to plan a route like Tour de Dovre or Mjølkevegen and just go off and attempt it. If the legs feel good, cycle 80-100km. If the legs feel tied, cut it short and cycle less. I think you will find that you can do more than you can imagine. If you can cycle 100km in one day with 150 watts indefinitely, you’re already ahead of many people in regard to fitness and endurance.
Last year I came across a woman in her 40’s who had a bike/bag set up that I could barely lift up (40kg+). She was about 160cm and was cycling 100km a day over the mountains. I asked her how she was managing. She said she takes her time and keeps pedaling – the kilometers clock up!
I wouldn’t worry about trying to cycle 150km before embarking on a tour. Better to do a simple overnight trip and see how you feel (100-150km). If that goes okay try a two-night/three-day trip (200km+) next, and if you enjoy the experience, then try something longer. I really think you are ready and summer doesn’t last long!
