Important Information if cycling the Atlantic Coast Route (Eurovelo 1 /Route 1) from Bergen to the North!
It has come to Cycle Norway’s attention that a tunnel bypass near the town of Førde has been closed for several months due to a landslide. Surprisingly the tunnel option, which is prohibited to cyclists (Kvernbergtunnelen), has not been opened for cyclists. It’s 770m on a low-traffic road. This means Eurovelo 1 is blocked at this point with no alternative. In Cycle Norway’s opinion, this is totally unacceptable, and I believe it breaks Eurovelo rules.
To reach Førde (heading north) or Sognefjorden (heading south). Please follow this alternative route I have created.
There is a gravel section that requires some climbing, and one small section is rough with stones, but we believe is manageable with all bike types. You can skip this gravel and cycle on the E39 if you prefer but expect some trucks and traffic, especially during peak work hours. If you have any experience of this area, please comment below.
If you follow the Eurovelo 1 route to the prohibited tunnel, you will have a long detour back, or you can wait for an infrequent bus. You can also ride through the tunnel with one finger in the air, but Cycle Norway does not recommend or endorse this, and fines are possible if caught.
Further info has been added to the safety tab on the route page.
