Tunneler

Intro

On the open road, tunnels can become one of the most intimidating aspects of cycling in Norway. No matter how experienced you are, it is difficult to fully prepare for the sudden noise, changing light conditions, poor air quality, echoing traffic, and vehicles passing at speeds of up to 80 km/h. For many visiting cyclists, tunnels are the part of Norway they worry about most before arriving.

The reality, however, is more balanced than many people expect. On most long-distance cycling routes in Norway, tunnels are simply part of the landscape and transport network. The majority are relatively short, located on quieter roads, and straightforward to ride through with proper preparation. In some regions, careful route planning can even allow you to avoid most major tunnels altogether.

Cycling in Tunnels Norway

That said, Norway has more than 1,200 road tunnels, and conditions can vary enormously from one tunnel to the next. Some are calm and almost forgettable. Others can feel mentally and physically demanding, particularly for inexperienced riders or those uncomfortable with confined spaces and heavy traffic.

This page is designed to prepare you honestly for what to expect. The information below comes from first-hand experience riding through every type of tunnel imaginable across Norway, from short coastal passages to long, dark mountain tunnels deep in the fjords. I’m not going to pretend every tunnel is pleasant. Some are genuinely challenging and will not be for everyone. But with the right knowledge, equipment, timing, and route choices, tunnels can usually be managed safely and with far less stress than most people initially fear.

The goal of this guide is not to scare you away from cycling Norway, but to give you the confidence, preparation, and realistic understanding needed to travel safely and enjoy the journey ahead.
