Vestkapp Peninsula

It’s hard to overstate just how raw and striking this peninsula is. Jutting out into the North Atlantic halfway between Bergen and Ålesund, it sits in that forgotten stretch of coast most tourists never bother with. Aside from a few surfers and campervans chasing white-sand beaches, this is quiet country.

For cyclists, it’s a gift.

You roll out of either the small fishing village of  Selja or from Måløy, a historic coastal town wrapped in hills and long horizons. Northward, the landscape opens into the Stad peninsula, home to traditional fishing villages and three tough, spectacular climbs. These ascents give you the full sweep: mountains, ocean, cliffs, and empty roads with 360-degree exposure.

The high point, literally and figuratively, is Vestkapp. At 500 metres above the sea, it’s the unofficial western edge of mainland Norway. The climb is unforgiving, but as you rise the world keeps widening. Hardly anyone cycles here; far more people ride to Nordkapp than to Vestkapp, which says everything about how overlooked this region still is.

Then there are the beaches. Long white stretches of sand backed by green hills and sharp peaks, this is the only place in Norway that genuinely stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Lofoten. If you want to put the bike down and breathe for a day, Hoddevik is the spot: a tiny surf town with board rentals, lessons, and a few places to stay while you test yourself against some of Northern Europe’s best swells.

This is a short route, but it packs more variety than many week-long trips. For riders based in Bergen or Ålesund, it’s an ideal long weekend, easy enough to reach thanks to Norway’s express boat links to Måløy and Selje, and far enough off the tourist trail to feel like you’ve found something few others ever bother to see.
