Day 3: How do I describe today? I have just arrived back to Ålesund having cycled one of the most beautiful day routes on the planet. Tomorrow I take the coastal boat further North but that meant today I was free to ditch the bikepacking bags and do a day ride. On Cycle Norway’s Base/Day ride series from Ålesund there is one route that I have been crying out to cycle.
Three years ago I cycled part of it on the way to Nordkapp. Today I planned to do it all! Of all the day rides in Norway I would say this is in the top two. Only Geiranger Rundt can match this epic adventure along the fjords and through one of the greatest valleys on the planet.
The morning began by taking the ferry from Ålesund over to Hjørundfjorden. Few people know about the quiet back road along the fjord and long may it continue that way! The morning mist gave the fjord an extreme feel and added so much to the experience. It felt like I was entering a fantasy world as I looked over at the mist lingering on top of the mountains.
Halfway down the road, I came across a herd of goats standing together on a small bank overlooking the fjord. They never moved as I approached – I guess it was their way of saying this is our view find your own!
On reaching Sæbø I quickly grabbed a cold drink and jump on the ferry to take me across the fjord. It is hard to believe that the fjord journey is free for cyclists! I stood on the top deck just admiring the incredible mountains rising straight up from the fjord.
Next up was Norangsdalen, the most beautiful valley in the world (according to me)! The valley is less than 100m wide in places and has vertical rock walls on either side. I took my time cycling it. Every meter is precious, every kilometer is an adventure. I could write endless info about this valley but my pictures say a lot more.

Once you finish this valley you can follow the road down to Geiranger Fjord where more spectacular views are on offer. It is a never-ending scene of beauty around every corner. The ride took 9 hours in total and not one moment was I bored or looking at my watch. You don’t even realize you’re cycling at times, the nature completely possesses you throughout the ride. The thought of driving these roads sends shivers down my spine. This area is made for cycling don’t consider another option!
We take a break tomorrow but will be back cycling on Monday a little further North as we head to the Arctic. More to come!
