The Cycling Video That Took 5 Years to Film

As I sit here writing, my work desk is surrounded by external hard drives—nine and counting. Each one is packed with a single thing: cycling footage. More specifically, years of footage from every corner of Norway, captured in every imaginable condition.

Sifting through this digital archive is no small task. Finding a specific moment—like the time a moose sprinted across the road near Røros in 2021—can take 30 minutes or more. Was it on the red drive? No. Maybe the light grey one? After a few moments of frustration, I remember moving it six months ago. This is my reality when working with over 30 terabytes of footage accumulated over five years.

But this chaos has its rewards. The real magic happens when all those moments come together to form a story that has never been told before. No other cycling organization—perhaps anywhere in the world—has documented two-wheeled travel in Norway at this scale. Even with unlimited resources, replicating this collection would take years.

Some locations demanded multiple visits to get the perfect shot. Aursjøvegen, for example, took several attempts before I finally captured it in all its essence. Other places, like Hjørundfjorden, gifted me an almost mythical atmosphere—low-hanging clouds rolling over dark waters at just the right moment. No amount of planning or money can guarantee shots like these. Sometimes, it’s about being in the right place at the right time.

All of this dedication, patience, and sheer persistence culminated in our new promotional video. In under eight minutes, we take you through 47 locations, each one carefully chosen to showcase Norway’s unparalleled cycling landscapes. The editing process was ruthless. Some of the most stunning footage—Senja’s dramatic coastline, Nordkapp’s otherworldly cliffs, Telemark’s deep forests—had to be left out because they didn’t serve the story we were telling. The goal was not just to show Norway but to make the viewer feel the essence of cycling here.

Beyond breathtaking scenery, this video serves a bigger purpose. Cycle Norway exists to highlight the incredible opportunities available to cyclists in this country, while also providing the crucial services needed to make these journeys possible. Planning, organization, and flexibility are the keys to enjoying a successful cycling holiday in Norway, and our video, we hope, delivers that message clearly. We believe this year will be a record for the number of bike tourists visiting Norway, and we hope our work will serve as a foundation for many new and returning explorers.
