Hello, I am planning to do a bikepacking tour in Norway in August. I would be interested in how I can best pay (cash, Mastercard, payment app, if so which app for foreigners?). Thanks very much.
Contactless payment is widely available, and I usually use Apple Pay or Garmin Pay. You can also use a regular debet or credit card contactless. Can’t remember the last time I used cash, but there are cash options in all grocery stores and gas stations I have been in.
On Public transport, you download the local app and buy tickets through that system. The rest of the time I just use google pay on my phone. Cash is a thing of the past here in Norway.
I’ve been touring in norway for the past month and I would largely agree that you don’t need cash. That being said, I’ve stayed at several camp sites where there was no reception (but there was facilities) and there was just a drop box for a cash donation. Something like 5o NOK for the night. I use my credit card for most purchases but have found it helpful to always have a little cash on hand.
Just arrived at an old campsite tonight. Showers require 10kr for hot water. What a bugger. No shower tonight!
Handy to have a few when the reception is closed.
