Hi,
I’m planning a “midsummer trip” (mostly) along Sognefjellsveien – but eastbound. I’m really unsettled about the climb up to Sognefjellet: Is it a stupid idea because it’s physically demanding and the views are better westbound? I’d also love to get motivated by Matthew’s road signs along the climb on the east side but. I rode some climbs in Norway already but this one is a difficult decision for me.
Second question: Regarding Rondane/ Dovre national parks, route planner Komoot shows route 6 running straight through Dovre and Rondane from Dovre to Folldal. The official route bypasses the Dovre area via Ringebu and Gudbrandsdalen. Any recommendation?
(The idea is to get via Røros to Östersund in Sweden to enter Snälltåget night train to Malmö which starts operating around midsummer.)
Hi Michel,
Yes going east over Sognefjellet from Lom is a lot easier to do. From the west, it’s a very tough climb up!
I don’t think you will have too many problems cycling this route if you have experience (which you do). Just take your time and enjoy the scenery. But if the weather is bad over Sognefjellet, it’s worth hanging back or finding an alternative.
Yes, go over Grimsdalen (part of tour de dovre) as that is a better route with no cars and hard-packed gravel. Look at my all-road series where you see a few of the routes go over that area.
Thanks a lot for the tips! I guess I’ll better try to do Sognefjellet from the east, riding two swerves.
I have little time but I’ll definitely take my time to enjoy the scenic views up there 🙂
