Hello! We’re visiting Norway from Australia, and going bikepacking for a couple of weeks starting in Tromso, then Senja and Lofoten. What shops do you recommend for stocking up on food? And any particular meals/ snacks you suggest we try? 🙂
Hi Kat, coming from Australia where you have large supermarkets with numerous fresh products the North of Norway might be a bit disappointing! But you don’t go to the Arctic for the food. The views, scenery, fresh air, and midnight sun will certainly make up for the limited food options.
One of the better supermarkets in the North is Bunnpris

In the south of Norway ‘Meny’ is the best supermarket although not cheap. They only have one in the north near Tromsø: https://meny.no/finn-butikk/
My go-to evening meal option is Turmat – they are based in Tromsø and have been fueling active Norwegians for years. It’s vacuum-packed dry meals but really high quality and easy to enjoy after a long day on the bike. You can buy them at sports shops. I would stock up in Tromsø- https://www.xxl.no/jakt-tur/villmark/turutstyr/turmat/c/200406
When it comes to food to try I’m not the best at answering this question. The must-try chocolate bar is SMASH – It’s amazing!
Have you tried Norwegian Brown Cheese? Lofoten smoked salmon?
Maybe some others can make recommendations? @karen1234 @phillipkaspersenme-com
When you are in Lofoten, cycle to Henningsvær (a famous fishing village with a football pitch at the end of the island). There are some good restaurants with local food. Also, Reise and Svalvær will have some nice places to try local food.
Thanks Matthew. Great tips. Will stock up on the Turmat in Tromsø. Seems practical to go vacuum packed food. I’ll look forward to trying the local smoked salmon, and finding a restaurant or two at those places.
Hi Kat! If you were looking for some cafes/restaurants to try then I just want to give a little shout out to the FURU hostel in Lofoten, or really their food – it’s amazing, and they get as much as possible local produce in and around Lofoten. There’s not many restaurants on Senja but I know there’s one at the beautiful Eresfjord beach.. Enjoy your trip! 🙂
Oh and special Norwegian snacks: waffles, cinnamonbuns (cycle to Unstad beach and get one at the surf shop, they cost a fortune but they’re seriously good…), dried fish. Trevarefabrikken and Klatrekafeet in Henningsvær (Lofoten) are cozy cafes to visit, but tend to get really busy..
Thanks Karen for the local tips! Looking forward to trying out your suggestions.
