Hello,
thank you for this great ressource! However, the choice between so many routes can be a little overwhelming!
I plan to cycle with my girlfriend in Norway for roughly 4 weeks (+- some days) beginning in the second week of july. We will arrive in Oslo and would like to reach the north cape before taking a combination of public transport and maybe some hurtigruten back to Oslo. Above Trondheim the selection is quite easy as we will simply follow the atlantic coast route. However getting to Trondheim leaves us with a couple of choices:
-Take the NS 7. This would be quite straight forward and also quite direct but this route follows the E6. We feel like 4 Weeks is not too long and extending the route would certainly make it stressful for us.
– Take the NS 9. I haven’t seen much about this route so im unsure about scenery as well as highlights.
– A wild combination of Cycleroutes like NS 4 to Gol, NS 5 to Vinstra, NS 6 to Roros and finally NS9 to Trondheim. Would this be a viable alternative compared to the NS 5 and maybe a little more enjoyable compared to following the E6 for so long?
– Somehow get to Bergen and just do the whole Atlantic coast route? Getting to Bergen by Train/Bus would take another day or so which we would not like. We will not fly anywhere.
– Maybe there are other options where one could just easily skip certain sections by using public transport
As you can see I’m a little overwhelmed just because there are so many choices and highlights that it ist quite hard to keep track of.
And again, thank you so much for this Website and all your Videos Matthew, those have been really useful!
I just noticed, that the combination of NS routes is somewhat similar to the Kristiansand – Trondheim Route, which i totally missed before. So we will likely join this route from Gol on after taking the E4.
Hi Marc,
The first thing to remember is you can not do everything in 4 weeks. As you write Trondheim to Nordkapp is straight forward but from Oslo you have many options. If you look on the individual specific pages for National Cycle Routes and Atlantic Coast there are many options to skip sections using public transport.
Route 9 is very remote and I think for your trip this is not a practical option. Route 7 is nice and direct as you write and easy to jump on train and skip sections if required. However taking a combination of routes to Gol, Vinstra, etc is a more beautiful route to do. If you reach Vinstra and are behind schedule you can jump on the train to Trondheim knowing you have experienced the most beautiful areas between Oslo and Vinstra.
I think Bergen is not a good option with the time you have. Bergen to Trondheim is 1000km (plus travel time to get there). Oslo to Trondheim via Gol, Vinstra, Rorøs allows you to see the east side of Norway and then from Trondheim you have the West Coast. That combination is perhaps a better option to see more diversity of Norway. Don’t get me wrong Bergen to Trondheim is wonderful and flatter but if I was you I would start in Oslo and use the train to skip sections if required. I hope this helps.
Last tips: cycle where the weather is best!
Thanks for your reply, really appreciate it!
Good point about the remoteness of route 9, I didn’t think about it in the context of public transport opportunities. So I think what we’ll do is use parts of the Kristiansand – Trondheim Route and see if we skip either from Vinstra or somewhere later. Seeing more of this country should be more important than doing the whole route self-powered.
I’d have one more question, how many days would you calculate for getting from the Nordkapp back to Oslo? Currently the plan would be a combination of Hurtigruten from Honningsvag – Tromso, somehow get to Fauske/Bodø and then take the train back to Oslo.
About 4 days. I would take a plane from Alta if short on time. Pick up a Bikebox at Alta Inter sport.
