Tagged: How to choose where to go?
Hi. Going to Oslo tomorrow. I want to cycle for 7-10 days on my mountain bike. And I’m afraid to choose wrong where to go 🙂 really want to see something pretty 🙂
I can cycle around 100km a day or a bit less if it is a lot of climbing.
I had no time for planning so I just want to take a beautiful route and stay on it.
Maybe just Oslo-Bergen?
Any other recommendations?
Really appreciate any advice 🙂
Hi Lina,
It’s great to hear you’re heading on a cycling trip and understand the planning side is a lot of work which you’d rather not deal with.
There are many great routes to do from Oslo, but you should check the weather forecast as some routes might be drier than others.
Personally I would say cycling across the country is a real highlight and should take you about 6-8 days if you cycle around 80km a day.
Oslo to Bergen – is a classic and follows both paved and gravel roads. The highlights include Rallarvegen and Hardanger Fjord, to name but a few.

Here is extra info on the Rallarvegen gravel section: http://www.ridewithgps.com/routes/39606831?privacy_code=E9Vjb0QdoUH3tbkG
There is also a video that will talk you through the route here: http://www.cyclenorway.com/routes/norse-all-road-series/overview/route-1-2/
The other route I recommend is Oslo to Stavanger: http://www.ridewithgps.com/routes/39418051?privacy_code=uwPmRvH5Uy2Ijhst
The forest and canals of Telemark and Lysefjorden are two amazing highlights.
Once again, I will talk you through the route here: http://www.cyclenorway.com/routes/norse-all-road-series/overview/route-2/
Both routes have climbing to be done, but Oslo – Bergen is less steep and perhaps a better option for many people.
There is also some further in-depth info about both of them here: http://www.facebook.com/cyclenorwaycom/posts/pfbid0M8YQm4vQPnb9oVbV5KNi6ivvi8dhzsA5kVsVm4RJT9Soo9aZfdoMUBwZtYyNiudAl

Thanks!
Really appreciate your advice. I will read it in a plane 🙂
One thing I want to ask. Do I need to bring a bike locker? It is heavy and I really don’t want to. But it is possible to leave a bike for some time somewhere? Just to go for grocerie shopping. I also planning to camp there. Can I just leave my bike unlocked?
And one more question. What is the best way to reach Oslo-Bergen rout from OSL Airport? Can I cycle there? Or I better take some public transportation?
Hi Lina,
I asked the same question two month ago: https://cyclenorway.com/topic/bike-lock-in-the-norwegian-countryside/
Enjoy your trip 🙂
From Oslo Airport you can take the train with your bike to Oslo central station and start the route from there. If want to skip the ride out of the city (it’s easy to get lost leaving the city). Jump on a local train to Asker or Drammen and start the route from there. The train app to download is called ‘Entur’. You can buy tickets and find timetables on it, etc.
You can cycle to Oslo from the airport if you wish. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/42505600
