Hi,
I have been gifted time to do 3 days of gravel riding in Norway next week, and I’ve been researching for a while. I’m traveling with my car from Oslo to reach different areas and then I’ll do loops from different locations and overnight at hotels. I’ll be riding a gravel bike with 42 mm tires and I’m not allergic to doing trails, pushbiking or long days in the saddle.
The first day I’m planning to do Tour de Dovre + Snøhetta (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/43890675) but the last two days I’d like to ride large parts of Mjølkevegen.
Northern Mjølkevegen loop: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/43890667
I’ll probably go from Bygdin. The first loop includes most of the northern parts of Mjølkevegen (including parts of the scenic route + Jotunheimvegen), this loop I feel pretty good about in theory. There is just one section I’m a bit insecure about, it’s the transition from Riddarspranget to Hovdasmovegen. It looks like there is a forest road on the satellite maps, but I figure I’ll ask here if anyone knows anything about it? Otherwise I’ll get on Hovdasmovegen a bit further up north instead. Also, Am I going to be sorry about cutting out the wilderness part from Skåbu – Vinstra? I’ve prioritized Jotunheimvegen. At first I was planning on riding Jotunheimvegen back and forth, but after looking at street view from road 51 I changed my mind and included it instead (looks amazing). I’ll do that bit first thing and start early so I might be lucky to miss out on most of the traffic anyway.
Southern Mjølkevegen loop: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/43890981
While the other loops are going to be challenging in a sort of sensible way, this one will probably be one of the harder rides I’ve ever done because of all the climbing (I’ve done 12+ hours in one go before but that was with a third of the climbing on this route and while rested..).
I’ll probably start from Vaset. There are some transitions that looks “sketchy”. Especially to lake Helin between Strøsølane to Tangane. But the satellite pictures looks promising, and the pictures from lake Helin makes me want to go there 🙂 Also, on the map there is a transition over E16 (Tyinvegen) that looks like you don’t have to be anywhere on it, is that ridable (km 110-120 on the map)? Looks like it is some kind of bike path on the OSM Cycle map.
We all know planning from the comfort of our homes is one thing (and reality another) so there is some “hubris insurance” built into the route, I can make up my mind as I go depending on time/legs/weather etc and just cut it shorter (skipping Slettefjell and/or lake Helin for instance). One of the insurances includes doing this bit from Langehage: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/43891147, has anyone ridden that and/or can tell me any more about it?
Also overall I’m wondering if there is something I’m missing in and around this area of Norway that you would recommend me doing instead (apart from Rallarvegen which I’ll save for another time)?
Thanks in advance!
/ Jesper
Hi Jesper, because your post had a lot of links, it was required to be authorised first. I’m sorry for the late reply, and guess you have already done the ride.
I just hope you didn’t get caught up in storm Hans!
How did it go? Did you have any issues?
I didn’t see any major problems with your routes. The last route across the river is easy to walk across, but the road can be muddy in wet weather.
The ‘E16’ bike route I don’t like and prefer to ride on the E16 – How did it go for you?
How did it go from Riddarspranget to Hovdasmovegen – there are some nice roads in that area that few people cycle.
