Hi!
I’m planning to do Bergen-Tromsø in August this summer. Since i have about 3 weeks for the trip, i’m planning to skip some parts via express ferries.
First i was planning to take the express ferry from Bergen to Selje, cutting about 400km and the wettest part around Bergen.
Then i rewatched EP.2 of the Bikepacking Norway’s Coast Series on Matthew’s Youtube channel.
I really admired the section after Førde to the Kjenndal glacier via Innvikfjorden and later on cycling Hjørundfjorden (quick and dirty sketch based on the video: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/43032583).
After checking, i realized that the Atlantic Coastal Route (as the name suggests) sticks to the coast and goes on to Florø and Måløy.
This really makes me want to take the express ferry from Bergen to Askvoll and ride the whole section. Altough it would mean i will probably have to cut out some section later on.
Currently, i am leaning towards cutting Sandnessjøen-Bodø via the express ferry 23-731. Maybe also Kristiansund-Trondheim, depending on how fast i can press on.
@Matthew (or anyone else): Would you recommend the Kjenndal glacier detour over the coastal route? Also, which parts of the Bergen-Tromsø route would you recommend cutting if time runs short?
Would love to hear any toughts on this, thanks a lot in advance!
This is a really tough question to answer as the whole coast is beautiful and any part you skip you may want to come back to cycle another time.
How many kilometers do you plan to ride in a day on average?
I think what you suggest is a good starting point. Bergen to Askvoll and then take the route you have made to Ålesund (it’s amazing as you know). The coastal route is also beautiful but come back and do that another time! You could skip Kristiansund – Trondheim with the express boat (it is a nice quiet area of the country but once again you can come back and do it another time).
Once you are in Trondheim I would try and do it all as Sandnessjøen-Bodø is the best part. You could take the Hurtigruten (deck ticket – around 90 euros) and skip the first part to Brønnøysund. (Trondheim – Brønnøysund)
Bodø to Tromsø you should be able to do it in a week or so.
I think three weeks is enough with these options.
