Hei
I already posted this topic with some maps in it yesterday but it said “pending moderation” and when I send an email to info@cyclingnorway.com to get it fixed, the mail didn’t went through – here we go again:
There seems to be a gravel shortcut (looks like and ATV trail) between Alta and Lakselv: It starts on Sennalandet mountain plateau where E6 takes a sharp left turn to the North and ends near the river mouth in Stabburnes at the coast. Route planners probably don’t show the connection because of a ford just about one kilometer east of the junction with E6 but Google Maps route planner in bicycle mode recommends it.
You can follow parts of the trail on satellite images at norgeskart.
Has anybody used or at least tried this shortcut? I’m tempted to give it a try to avoid riding the E6 and have a little adventure instead. Any thoughts about it?
Hi,
Can you send me the maps – info@cyclenorway.com
(Not cyclingnorway). I will take a look and ask a few locals. My gut feeling is no but will double check.
Thanks a lot; I just send you an email.
This is the rout on Google Maps: https://www.google.de/maps/dir/70.1889313,24.0458402/70.187116,24.912733/@70.1474,24.3887451,11.5z/data=!4m5!4m4!1m1!4e1!1m0!3e1?entry=ttu
Hi Michel,
I’ve spoken to some locals in Alta and they say it is only a hiking trail with limited to no ability to ride. There is no gravel sections. You could hike your bike through the area (maybe riding small parts?). But I would advise against this and stick on the paved road. I should also note the environmnet here is very different to Icelands interior and will be more challenging from a bike perspective.
Matthew
Hi Matthew,
thanks for the detailed information about this trail. Hiking my bike for 40 kilometers doesn’t sound very tempting, especially in this (possibly) harsh environment. I will definitely take your advice and take the paved road up to Olderfjord. Won’t be less of an adventure, I guess 🙂
It’s great to get first-hand information about such distant areas from your network. Actually, I don’t think I would even consider cycling that far north without your trip reports and detailed route information. Kudos to you and your team!
Out of sheer curiosity, I checked the beginning of the trail on Sennalandet mountain plateau, and of course the locals are right: There is no way you could cross this river, and the trail didn’t look promising as well 😀
