We’re doing a tour this July From Tromsø to Bodø (coming from the USA) (thanks Matthew for the video inspiration!). Is mailing our bike travel bags via Posten to our hotel in Bodø feasible? Is there a better alternative? We would rather not go the cardboard bike box route. Cost isn’t so much a concern as actually seeing our travel bags again… Thanks.
Hi Ken,
You can read about the options here: https://cyclenorway.com/bike-box-travel/
Posten is an option but you will need to check with your hotel in Bodø regarding their policy.
Perhaps a better option is Hurtigruten. They offer a freight service where your bike box, luggage, or even bike can be transported up or down the coast. They have over 30 locations that you can drop or pick up from. I’ve been told their prices are reasonable for the service provided. Unfortunately, the site is only in Norwegian but it’s worth contacting them if you plan to fly out of a different city along the west coast.
Following up on this question with actual experience… we sent our bike bags via a Posten “Post i Butikk” location in Tromsø. Bags were addressed to our Bodø hotel, but they ended up being delivered to another Posten location near our Bodø hotel. Bags received a tracking number and it was easy to retrieve them.
Overall, this was a super easy and inexpensive (~$25usd per bag) way to get your bike bags to your ending point.
Thanks for sharing your experience. That sounds like a good option. But how long do you get to pick up the boxes before they are skipped back to Tromsø? That would be my only concern if traveling for weeks on a bike.
Per Posten, the pickup deadline is 3 weeks from arrival at the destination point. Clearly this wouldn’t work for an extended trip, but it is a convenient option for shorter trips that start and end in different cities.
