What a great website, a fantastic resource as I plan an impromptu bikepacking trip to Norway – Thank you.
I will have about 3 – 4 weeks to spend in Norway, arriving on the 13th August and I have been trying to decide where to arrive by plane from Ireland. The more I look at into it, the further north I want to explore to see some of the epic fjords. I had initially thought to get to Bergen and travel south, then my thinking shifted to get to Andelsund to travel south, now I’m thinking Trondheim or perhaps even Bodo to travel south.. All the routes seem to follow a northerly direction due to the prevailing winds. My theory is travelling south from mid-August to early September will hopefully put me in the best position for favourable weather as I move south. I would also dearly love to see Rallarvegen or even the Milk and Navvies route.
I will be wild camping and aiming for 100-150km a day.
I haven’t yet booked my return flight home. Perhaps Bergen or Oslo makes most sense.
I guess my questions are..
With 3-4 weeks available to me, would Bodo > Trondheim > Alesund > Milk and Navvies > Bergen be a good use of my time?
Travelling in southerly direction from Bodo in mid Aug-Sept, does this make sense or am I better to try cycling in a northerly direction at that time of year.
Would you recommend alternative routes?
Huge thanks.
Hi,
1) Short answer, yes!
2) Yes, i would travel south at that time of the year. It can get very cold in September heading north.
3) I think what you have planned is good for your first visit. Many highlights, both flat coastal and mountainous regions. I’m unsure how you go from Ålesund to Mjølkevegen and Rallarvegen. There are no trains from Ålesund and it will require a bit of cycling to reach Vinstra to start Mjølkevegen.
If you want to discuss this in more detail and go through each stage and your options available book a call with me: https://calendly.com/cyclenorway
Brilliant, thanks Matthew.
I booked my flight to Tromso for middle of August. Preparing for the worst weather abd hoping for the best! Really looking forward to it. This site is key to my planning.
Point noted re. Ålesund to Mjølkevegen and Rallarvegen. I will zone in on what the latter parts of the trip will look like after the first few days. Would you consider that route a highlight for a first trip and try to fit it in or recommend an alternative?
Yes, fit in Mjølkevegen and Rallarvegen if you have time. They are classic gravel routes that must be cycled.
