Yes going east over Sognefjellet from Lom is a lot easier to do. From the west, it’s a very tough climb up!

I don’t think you will have too many problems cycling this route if you have experience (which you do). Just take your time and enjoy the scenery. But if the weather is bad over Sognefjellet, it’s worth hanging back or finding an alternative.

Yes, go over Grimsdalen (part of tour de dovre) as that is a better route with no cars and hard-packed gravel. Look at my all-road series where you see a few of the routes go over that area.
