The World’s Most Beautiful Ride?

This really is an experience beyond anything else on the planet. There is never-ending spectacular scenery from the minute you leave Oppdal town all the way to the southern tip of Norway. Endless fjords, waterfalls, vertical rock mountains and lush green valleys are all remarkably unique and beautiful. It’s like a tour of what the ice age left behind, and at some points, you may feel you have stepped back 12,000 years.

But all this beauty comes at a cost. There are many mountain passes to climb and descend, giving you little respite, which can be very challenging for even the fittest of cyclists with a loaded bike. There are also some tourist traffic roads to contend with which can be busy during the peak of the day. Plan rest days into your schedule and keep your bike light. The difference a few extra kilograms can make is big over several days or weeks.

I was very fortunate with the weather in 2021. A high-pressure front swept over southern Norway, bringing calm and settled weather for a sustained period. Not everyone will be this lucky. Wet and unpredictable weather conditions characterise the climate. Some days, the road ahead will have limited visibility with mist and low-lying clouds. The high mountain passes can be cold and unforgiving, even in peak summer. However, you may find yourself in heaven when the sun shines. Manage your expectations, be organised and informed (ask questions in the comment box), and you will find this ride one of the greatest on the planet.
