Hello good people.
I am planning a trip in mid-August.
I arrive Oslo in the morning with the ferry from Denmark
Stage 1, Oslo – a place between Oslo and Geilo.
Stage 2, “the place” – Geilo
Stage 3, Geilo – Rauland
Stage 4, Rauland – Hovden
Stage 5, Hovden – Vrådal
Stage 6, Vrådal – Arendal – Kristiansand
If it´s necessary, I´m able to use one more day for the trip.
It must be ridden as a bikepack with “light” packing. And thats include a tent.
The bike is a Gravel Bike
I am in doubt whether I should just follow the normal country roads. Or whether some real gravel can be driven, and perhaps cross some mountains “off road”.
I’m in 45 years old and in relatively good cycling shape when I get to August. 200 km. road kilometers is not a problem on my road bike.
Please let me there all you experince for this trip.
Hi Jacob,
My advice is to spend two days cycling to Geilo using the nice mainly gravel route to Gol and onwards to Geilo.

I think Flå could be a good place to spend the first night. There are hotels and a free shelter not too far away: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Fiskesø+med+Shelter+og+toilet/@60.4250586,9.413113,14z/data=!4m15!1m8!3m7!1s0x464068be513bb3b5:0x205367fc31a5efd5!2sFlå+Municipality,+3539+Flå!3b1!8m2!3d60.3837212!4d9.4859049!16zL20vMDE4NzZ2!3m5!1s0x4640654e5bdf0a2b:0xc80f0463ae11a653!8m2!3d60.4338099!4d9.4103906!16s%2Fg%2F11k10_7j5v
From Geilo I would follow the route here to Rauland. This goes over Hardangervidda (gravel mountain pass) but you can skip it and stick to the valley if the weather is bad. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/42687633?privacy_code=qfHZyrJql6q6Qv47
From Rauland it’s up to you really. The roads are reasonably quiet in these areas. You will see some of my route suggestions to get to Kristiansand here: https://cyclenorway.com/routes/norse-all-road-series/overview/
You will find many of the routes mentioned are on gravel or quiet roads and these really are the best to cycle with a gravel bike. Wild camping is pretty easy to do but there are also towns available to resupply and find accommodation.
I think you won’t have too many problems completing this in your time frame with what you write above. But it will be a tough hilly route with plenty of elevation gain.
I hope this information helps. It’s a beautiful area to cycle.
I super cool.
Will it be possible to get the routs on a gpx file. ??
Just follow these simple instructions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hk3LkZ1SArU
Hi, Jacob! I live in Kristiansand and I frequently cycle in most of the county of Agder (both on tarmac and gravel), so I might have some route suggestions which also include gravel, if you wish.
Mabey it’s just my, but I can’t see, that the links goes to the destination you meansure. ??
I have checked and all the highlighted routes go to your mentioned destinations
There are of course other routes online you should check out – the national cycle routes also go Oslo – Gol – Geilo – Rauland.

In the section between Hovden – Vrådal – Arendal there is an official route but patching several routes together gives you this:

But ensure you do your own research on top of these suggestions.
Hey Guys.
I have tryed the links again. Mabey I have misunderstod it. I was thinking, that that I got the exactly route, with the destinations. 🙂
Hi, This is a specific personal route you have come up with. I have shown you other routes on the website that follow the areas you want to cycle. This will allow you to build your own personal route. I have also personally put together a route from Hovden – Vrådal – Arendal for you. I’m unsure sure what else you require.
Hello.
Now I have again looked at your suggestions and started to understand them. thanks.
As I read it, from Oslo you will drive your route “from the back”
From Gol, you will use part of the route in link no. 2.
Etc….
Am I right?
Hi, There are several routes on the site that go from Oslo to Gol. It’s a very common cycling route.
I don’t know what you mean by ‘drive your routes from the back’.
Here is another option that I hope helps. Go to the National Cycle Route overview map and you will see a yellow and orange line showing you the national cycling route from Oslo to Gol. Download these gps files and modify them using which ever program you prefer (Komoot, ridewithgps, strava, etc, to fit your requirements.
http://www.cyclenorway.com/routes/national-cycle-routes/overview/
A video explaining how to download and modify the gpx files can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hk3LkZ1SArU
From Gol you can follow the orange line to Geilo. Then from Geilo you can follow the green and blue lines down to Rauland.
Everything you need to plan your route is on this website. I’m unsure if I can help you further on this matter. I wish you a safe trip.
Hey Metthew.
It is really a great help from you. If a go with the link first link from you from Oslo to Gol ( Flå) Will the direction from Oslo be ” direction Sandvika” ?.
Yes, I have reversed the route here, if that helps. www. ridewithgps.com/routes/43735815?privacy_code=NZ3rCIE4eWmCqVLoG5VGtSV8UD3hRjwJ
Note there is a 10km section when you have no other option but to cycle on Road 7 (main road with traffic). Ensure you have a reflextive vest and light flashing.
Thanks very much. Will it be necessary to bring a GPS tracker ( safety) in case of acceident, if there is no mobile network ?
Personally, I don’t think it’s required in the south of Norway. There will be help not far away if you have an accident.
Cycle Norway is dedicated to making Norway, safer and more enjoyable to experience by bike and to inspire and inform a growing audience of the opportunities available.
