Hello
I have put together a big circular route to ride this summer using some of your long distance routes on your website (thank you so much!), such as the Southern Explorer and Wilderness routes. I was planning on riding the route clockwise, but have realised some of the routes I have used your maps show them ridden in the opposite direction. Do you see this presenting many problems? Are your routes designed to be ridden in both directions?
Just wondering whether I need to do a massive rethink on what I’ve planned? / I’m better off riding the route anti-clockwise?
Many thanks,
Naomi
Hi! You can ride the routes from either direction. But I should note the southern explorer is for a bikepacking set up with a bike you can carry in places. If you have a heavy bike set up the routes you selected are unwise to ride.
Thank you for the advice. Is there a particular direction that would be better to ride the routes for any reason?
I do not have a particular recommendation when it comes to the direction. Look at the altitude gain and decide what is best for you. For example, the Wilderness route has less climbing if you start in Trondheim. The prevailing winds in Norway come from the southeast, so more chance of tailwinds starting in Stavanger for the southern explorer. But I really don’t think it matters that much.
Cycle Norway is dedicated to making Norway, safer and more enjoyable to experience by bike and to inspire and inform a growing audience of the opportunities available.
