Endel\u00f8se skoger, \u00e5pen tundra og himmel som aldri ser ut til \u00e5 ta slutt. Men for den eventyrlystne syklisten byr det p\u00e5 r\u00e5 skj\u00f8nnhet, glemte historier og en ensomhet som er vanskelig \u00e5 finne andre steder i Europa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\">Reisen min gikk over 2300 kilometer gjennom Arktis og Lappland, startet i \u00d8st-Finland og endte i Sverige, med en krevende strekning gjennom Norge imellom. Finland ga meg rolige skoger, grov grus og reinsdyrkantede veier. Norge testet utholdenheten min med h\u00f8ye plat\u00e5er, kald vind og en goldhet som presset utstyret mitt til det ytterste. Da jeg n\u00e5dde Sverige, ble landskapet litt mykere, men f\u00f8lelsen av isolasjon vedvarte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\">Hvert land brakte en forandring, ikke bare i terreng, men i atmosf\u00e6re. Det var en utholdenhetspr\u00f8ve, men ogs\u00e5 en sjelden sjanse til \u00e5 koble av og bevege seg gjennom en av Europas siste sanne villmarksomr\u00e5der. Dager gikk uten \u00e5 se noen. Aldri en som skygger unna en utfordring, han s\u00f8ker episke reiser som tar ham langt utover det vanlige, p\u00e5 to hjul og utenfor allfarvei.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>EuroVelo 13: Jernteppets rute<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reisen min startet med en stille tur p\u00e5 finske bakveier, som ledet meg til Suomussalmi, der jeg ble med p\u00e5 EuroVelo 13 \u201cJernteppestien\u201d. Denne ruten f\u00f8lger den historiske grensen fra den kalde krigen og g\u00e5r fra S\u00f8r-Finland helt til den norskegrensen. I denne regionen f\u00f8lger den stort sett riksvei 843, en rolig, landlig strekning som snor seg gjennom dyp skog og et rolig innsj\u00f8landskap. De f\u00f8rste dagene var syklingen jevn, trafikken nesten ikke-eksisterende, og landskapet, selv om det var vakkert, var repeterende nok til \u00e5 dempe sansene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure Selv om det ikke er ideelt for sykling, er det noen ganger ingen vei utenom n\u00e5r man reiser gjennom tynt befolkede omr\u00e5der. N\u00e5r det er sagt, var finske bilister stort sett hensynsfulle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-text-align-center has-black-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-c088a7df703afb06023b5a337129bb2b\" style=\"border-style:none;border-width:0px;border-radius:30px\"><blockquote><p><em>\u201cFra broen kan man se den russiske kysten bare noen f\u00e5 hundre<\/em><br><em> meter unna. Det er ingen tegn til bebyggelse, bare tause tr\u00e6r. <\/em><br><em>Det var en av de mest uhyggelige,<\/em> <em>mest tankevekkende \u00f8yeblikkene p\u00e5 reisen.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Etter \u00e5 ha passert Hossa nasjonalpark, et utrolig sted for fotturer eller terrengsykling, svingte jeg av hovedruten og inn i grusens villmark langs den russiske grensen. Disse veiene varierte dramatisk: noen var nylig vedlikeholdt, andre dypt hjulspor eller l\u00f8se med stein. Jeg syklet i sikksakk, klatret og steg ned gjennom uendelig boreal skog. Det var f\u00e5 landsbyer, ingen kafeer, og knapt et levende sjeler i sikte. Det finsk-russiske grenselandet er fullt av krigsminner og rester av gamle forsvarssystemer. I 1940 bygde titusenvis av finner en massiv forsvarslinje p\u00e5 1200 km for \u00e5 beskytte seg mot en mulig sovjetisk invasjon. Mange av de enorme steinblokkene og bunkerne de satte opp, ligger fortsatt skjult blant tr\u00e6rne, et stille vitne til tidligere kamper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Noen av disse stedene har forsvunnet fra kollektivt minne. De er overgrodd, rustne, \u00f8delagte, men fortsatt mektige. \u00c5 ri gjennom disse stedene fikk landskapet til \u00e5 f\u00f8les mindre tomt, som om noe s\u00e5 p\u00e5, lyttet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><div class=\"theme-image-wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclenorway.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/PXL_20250612_093249622-1-2-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32882\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cyclenorway.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/PXL_20250612_093249622-1-2-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cyclenorway.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/PXL_20250612_093249622-1-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cyclenorway.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/PXL_20250612_093249622-1-2-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cyclenorway.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/PXL_20250612_093249622-1-2.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Til slutt slo jeg meg igjen til EuroVelo-ruten p\u00e5 vei 950 n\u00e6r Oulanka nasjonalpark. Skogene ga plass til mer dramatiske \u00e5ser, elvedaler og det av og til en myr. Veien b\u00f8lget konstant. Ingen store stigninger, men den jevne opp-og-ned-syklusen t\u00e6rte p\u00e5 beina. Hver topp ga utsikt til mer tr\u00e6r og mer himmel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>E75 og Nordover-presset<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nord for Sodankyl\u00e4, ble alternativene begrenset. I 90 km ble jeg tvunget inn p\u00e5 E75, en hoved\u00e5re uten praktiske omkj\u00f8ringer. Det er ikke mye \u00e5 si om den, bare hodet ned, beina i spinn, \u00f8ynene p\u00e5 veiskulderen. Det var en n\u00f8dvendig ondskap for \u00e5 n\u00e5 neste etappe av reisen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Etter Ivalo fikk reisen en ny karakter. Mens de fleste reisende som dro til Kirkenes dro vestover rundt Inarij\u00e4rvi, tok jeg den mindre kjente ruten \u00f8stover p\u00e5 vei 969 mot Nellim. Det er ingen tegn til bebyggelse, bare tause tr\u00e6r. Det var et av de mest uhyggelige, mest tankevekkende \u00f8yeblikkene p\u00e5 reisen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grusveien fortsatte i 20 km, svingete og tom. Til slutt n\u00e5dde jeg den finske grensesonen, et restriktivt omr\u00e5de ingen sivile har lov til \u00e5 g\u00e5 inn i. Den vekslet mellom sykkelbare partier og ufremkommelig terreng fylt med steiner, r\u00e5tne gangbroer, velte tr\u00e6r og dype sumpomr\u00e5der. Noen ganger m\u00e5tte jeg dra sykkelen gjennom gj\u00f8rma, andre ganger m\u00e5tte jeg b\u00e6re den opp bratte stigninger. Stedet virket sp\u00f8kelsesaktig, en p\u00e5minnelse om hvor isolert denne stien en gang var \u2013 og fremdeles er.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stien nektet \u00e5 v\u00e6re forutsigbar. Det ene \u00f8yeblikket virket den som en klar sti over fast grunn; f\u00e5 minutter senere sto jeg ankelh\u00f8yt i sumpvann og pr\u00f8vde \u00e5 ikke miste en sko. Hver kilometer krevde full konsentrasjon og fysisk innsats. Det er en beskjeden steinhaug, men symbolsk viktig. Den markerer det n\u00f8yaktige m\u00f8tepunktet mellom Finland, Norge og Russland. To unge norske soldater hilste p\u00e5 meg, overrasket over \u00e5 se noen ankomme med sykkel fra Finland. De f\u00f8rste kilometerne var krevende, med ujevne steiner og flere gangbroer. Til slutt kom jeg til en grusvei og fulgte den nordover, hvor jeg slo leir i n\u00e6rheten av Pasvik naturreservat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jeg hadde ingen mobildekning p\u00e5 over 24 timer, en sjelden opplevelse i Skandinavia. Det fikk meg til \u00e5 innse hvor grundig tilkoblet vi har blitt, selv i villmarken. Den er humpete, lappet sammen enkelte steder, og vanligvis tom. Av og til fikk jeg glimt av Russland over elven. Det var soldater overalt, men stemningen var ikke anspent, bare en rolig observasjon. Milit\u00e6rets tilstedev\u00e6relse var vennlig og diskret. Vi nikket til hverandre, og jeg gikk videre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Den kvelden f\u00f8rte veien til store innsj\u00f8er og dype daler. Landskapet \u00e5pnet seg igjen, og en gyllen kveldssol kastet et skinn over vannet. Jeg stoppet for \u00e5 fotografere reinsdyr som beitet ved veikanten. Innsj\u00f8ene ble st\u00f8rre. Til slutt syklet jeg langs Langfjorden i den gyldne solen. Veien var tom, landskapet vidstrakt. Da jeg kom til Kirkenes, dro jeg forbi sentrum og fortsatte opp i fjellene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ved Korsfjord beitet reinsdyr langs veien. Her m\u00f8tte jeg Fetze, en syklist som var p\u00e5 vei mot Pasvik. Utstyret hans var mye bedre egnet for offroad-kj\u00f8ring. Fossens vann glitret i det myke lyset, noe som gjorde det til et minneverdig sted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neste morgen badet jeg i elva, en kald, men forfriskende oppv\u00e5kning. Deretter bes\u00f8kte jeg Skoltemuseet \u00c4\u2019vv, som gir et dypt innblikk i skoltesamenes kultur og h\u00e5ndverk. De hadde kopier av gamle elveb\u00e5ter, laget for spesifikke str\u00f8mninger og fisketeknikker. Derfra gikk jeg opp til Saviostolen, en benkformet stein der den samiske kunstneren John Savio en gang fant inspirasjon. Reinsdyr beitet i n\u00e6rheten. Utsikten over fjorden og myrene nedenfor f\u00f8ltes tidl\u00f8s. Det var en enkel tur, men et sterkt \u00f8yeblikk av perspektiv, vekk fra sykkelen og veien.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tilbake p\u00e5 sykkelen, satte jeg kursen mot Varangerfjorden. Veien slynget seg forbi brusende b\u00f8lger og ruvende klipper. Vinden gjorde fremdriften langsom, men det skiftende lyset og den dramatiske utsikten veide opp for det. P\u00e5 Varanger Samemuseum stoppet jeg for middag i et offentlig ly. En bratt stigning p\u00e5 160 meter f\u00f8rte meg inn i landet igjen. Snart ga Varangerkysten plass til den brede, stille Tana-dalen. Her endret landskapet seg igjen: brede sandbanker, furuskog og et roligere, mer ettertenksomt tempo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jeg satte opp teltet sent oppe ved elvebredden. Kroppen min trengte hvilen. Til slutt fortsatte jeg til Rustefjelbma, hvor jeg fant kaffe og varm mat p\u00e5 bensinstasjonen. Derfra svingte veien mot vest, og rullet uendelig over innsj\u00f8er, tundra og lave \u00e5skammer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jeg m\u00f8tte en nederlandsk syklist som kom mot meg. Han advarte meg om regn og kulde, men da vi skilte lag, br\u00f8t solen gjennom skyene. Mitt neste stopp var Rullesteinfj\u00e6ra, en avsidesliggende strand hvor b\u00f8lgene polerer steiner i alle former og farger. Turen var knappe 2 km hver vei, over humpete stier og myrete partier, men stedet i seg selv f\u00f8ltes magisk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default Jeg satt der i en time og gjorde ingenting annet enn \u00e5 se p\u00e5 tidevannet, helt oppslukt av rytmen til vannet og steinene. P\u00e5 veien tilbake la jeg merke til at hvert skritt over sm\u00e5steinene skapte sin egen stille musikk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Inn i hjertet av Nordkyn<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Det var sent da jeg begynte den lange klatringen opp til Ifjordfjelletplat\u00e5et. Lyset feide over \u00e5sene, og kastet lange skygger og opplyste reinsdyrflokker. Veien slynget seg h\u00f8yere gjennom et kaldt, ensomt landskap med sn\u00f8flekker og steinete kratt. Ved Ifjord tok jeg av p\u00e5 vei 888, som slynger seg 33 km langs kanten av Laksefjorden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jeg red inn i natten, med midnattssolen fortsatt hengende over horisonten. Temperaturen hadde rast ned. Jeg tok p\u00e5 meg alle lagene jeg hadde og pakket fort, fingrene numne, teltet gjennomv\u00e5tt. Vinden kom fra nord og pisket meg mesteparten av dagen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Veien klatret igjen, denne gangen forbi Reinoksevannet, en innsj\u00f8 fortsatt delvis frossen sent p\u00e5 sommeren. Landet var bart, flekket med gamle sn\u00f8fonner og isbrematede bekker. Sol og hagl vekslet hvert par minutter. Veien steg igjen, bratt og n\u00e5del\u00f8s, mot det siste plat\u00e5et f\u00f8r Mehamn. Her oppe er v\u00e6ret konge, og landskapet f\u00f8les n\u00e6rmere verdens ende enn nesten noe annet sted i Europa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Til slutt stupte veien ned mot kysten, og jeg rullet inn i Mehamn sent p\u00e5 dagen. Det f\u00f8ltes som slutten p\u00e5 noe. Jeg hadde kommet s\u00e5 langt nord. Lite tenkte jeg p\u00e5 h\u00f8ydemeterne da jeg la til Slettnes fyr i turen i Koomot: Det er over 50 kilometer og 850 h\u00f8ydemeter. Veien g\u00e5r opp og ned hele tiden, med vakker utsikt over Barentshavet, majestetiske daler og mange, mange reinsdyr overalt. P\u00e5 den siste strekningen fra landsbyen Gamvik til fyret er landskapet helt nakent, og til slutt ser du det endel\u00f8se havet. Jeg var s\u00e5 glad jeg kom meg dit f\u00f8r den nylig renoverte kafeen i fyrvokterboligen stengte. Men d\u00f8rene var l\u00e5st. Frustrasjonen var stor da jeg sto der i den kalde vinden, utmattet etter den lange kampen mot elementene. Det er ingen tr\u00e6r, ingen dekning, bare vind og himmel. Reinsdyr driver som sp\u00f8kelser over sn\u00f8flekkene. Veien bukter seg uendelig. Det var her jeg inns\u00e5 hvor mye beina mine ba om en pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c5 stige ned i Alta f\u00f8ltes som \u00e5 tre inn i en annen verden igjen. Pottehull, utvaskinger og gj\u00f8rmete spor tvang meg av sykkelen jevnlig. Jeg krysset bekker, syklet gjennom oversv\u00f8mte partier og dro sykkelen over steinete \u00e5ser. Utsikten gjorde det imidlertid verdt det: brede alpine plat\u00e5er, sn\u00f8dekte tinder i det fjerne, og en stillhet som var mer enn bare frav\u00e6r av lyd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure
