It is located next to the town of Øvre Årdal in the central highlands of Norway. The route offers breathtaking views of some of Norway’s highest mountains, and the valleys that cut through them. As the name suggests, the road often reaches altitudes around 1,000 meters (3,280 feet). Cyclists can expect steep climbs, sharp descents, and variable weather conditions, which add to the challenge. And did we mention it has 42 switchbacks on the way to the top!

42 switchback mania!

It was built over 100 years ago and closed for traffic back in the 1960s. Therefore, It’s hard to know when the road is clear of snow and ready for cycling. In 2022 the snow was still an issue in mid to late July but things look more promising this year. Cycle Norway WhatsApp group allows cyclists to relay live reports on roads across the country. It’s been an indispensable part of the community this season and now we have reports that Tusenmetern is nearly clear of snow!

Cycle Norway member Holger from Switzerland has recently completed the route and informs there are still some snowfields which are an issue to cross due to the steep slope and mountainous terrain.
