It was a magical evening with a beautiful sunset. The sky never went completely dark as I was now pretty far north. I managed to sleep 5 hours in a beautiful harbor cabin 5km from Brønnøysund. There was no time to rest longer I had a long day ahead with three ferry crossings and a ‘must do’ short hike up a mountain.

A short 1-hour ride from Brønnøysund is one of Norway’s most famous mountains. It’s the only mountain I know where summiting it is not the objective. I left my bike at the bottom and hiked up a path until I reached a steep section that leads me to one of the most unique mountain experiences on the planet. Torghatten is made up of two types of rock, at the top is solid unmoveable hard rock but at the bottom, the rock is more brittle and can break away from the mountain. During the end of the last ice age, a retreating glacier pushed a large amount of the soft rock away from the mountain but left the hard rock in place. The result was a giant hole directly through the mountain. It’s like the entrance to another world. You could consider it a rock cathedral! It has to be one of the most impressive natural rock formations I have ever witnessed and the pictures are pretty cool!

After spending some time flying a drone through the hole I jumped back on the bike and headed up the main cycling route Eurovelo 1. There are many ferries on this route and they run infrequently. There were many hours of waiting around. At one ferry port, I decided to explore the local area as I had two hours to kill. On a quiet road that leads to a dead-end, I stumbled across some rock art dating back 3000 years ago! The information board stated many experts had tried to understand what it meant but without any luck. I took one look and realized straight away what the message meant – ‘Keep cycling North you will see reindeer.’ The message turned out to be true on Day 7!

The final part of the day included cycling past Norway’s charming 7-peak mountain range called De Syv Søstre (The Seven Sisters). It’s Queen Sofie’s favourite mountain range and if you pay your respects to the sisters they will look after you as you head north or south. I always tell them they look beautiful and I do mean it!
